The SDWorx-Pay solutions supports the calculation and payment of Shared Parental Pay (ShPP).
ShPP enables parents to share up to 50 weeks of statutory leave and up to 37 weeks of statutory pay between them. The pay and leave may be shared in the first year after the birth of a child or an adoptice child is placed with the family.
Leave and pay can be taken in blocks by periods of work, or taken all in one go. Leave and pay can also chosen to be off work together or to stagger the leave and pay.
These are the SDWorx-pay payroll items for ShPP:

Format ddmmyyyy
Example
The date of the above is 8th April, 2022:
M015 08042022
NOTES:
- This date cannot be altered after the ShPP payments have started
- Enter 00000000 to remove.
| START DATE OF MOTHERS SMP OR START DATE OF ADOPTERS SAP PAYMENTS | M016 |
Use M016 to enter the start date of mothers SMP (for ShPP Birth) or start date of adopters SAP payments (For ShPP Adoption).
Format ddmmyyyy
Example
The date of the above is 8th April, 2022:
M016 08042022
NOTES:
- This datacode is used for the following types of parental pay:
- ShPP (Birth)
- ShPP (Adoption)
- This date cannot be altered after the ShPP payments have started
- This date cannot be later than the actual date of childbirth/placement
- This date cannot be later than the end of the current pay period
| MOTHERS / PRIMARY ADOPTERS RETURN TO WORK DATE | M017 |
Use M017 to enter the return to work date for the mother or primary adopter.
Format ddmmyyyy
Example
The date of the above is 8th April, 2022:
M017 08042022
NOTES:
- This date cannot be altered after the ShPP payments have started
- This date cannot be entered if a date of death (M015) has previously been entered.
- This date must be at least 2 weeks after the date of birth or placement of the child.
| SHARED PARENTAL PAY PAYMENT PATTERN | M018 |
Use M018 to enter the payment pattern for shared parental pay.
Format xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Where each occurrence of x can be one of:
- Y – Pay shared parental pay in the given period and deduct time from the weeks entitlement
- N – Do not pay shared parental pay, but do deduct from the weeks entitlement.
- W – The employee is working in the given period; do not pay shared parental pay in that period, do not deduct from the number of weeks entitlement.
- [space] – Same functionality as “Y”- Pay shared parental pay in the given period and deduct time from the weeks entitlement. There may be any number of trailing spaces (or the data may be entirely blank), but there must be no further populated positions to the right of the first blank position.
Example
The payment pattern is to be set to 5 periods of paid parental pay starting with this pay period, followed by 5 periods of working with no shared parental pay, followed by 2 weeks of not working with no shared parental pay. After the 12 specified periods, the employee IS paid parental pay (up to the normal end of qualifying payments)
M018 YYYYYWWWWWNN
NOTES:
- Each processing period, PayrollActive uses the leftmost pattern letter to govern the payment of ShPP in that period. That letter is then automatically removed, and the remaining letters (if any) moved 1 place left in preparation for the next processing period. Thus, if the pattern is to be amended for an employee mid-way through a sequence of payments, M018 should be entered with values from the current period onwards, NOT including any now-historic values for already processed periods.
- There is no difference in terms of payment calculation between W and N for a given period (ShPP is NOT paid).
- There is no difference in terms of payment calculation between Y and [space] for a given period (ShPP IS paid if the employee remains entitled to it.)
| START DATE OF NEXT PARENTAL PAY PERIOD | M021 |
Use M021 to enter the start date of the next parental pay period.
Format ddmmyyyy
Example
The date of the above is 8th April, 2022:
M021 08042003
NOTES:
- The date must not be earlier than the ShPP start date
- The date must be later than the date held against M021
- If the parental pay type is E (bereavement), a date entered here must not be later than the date 52 weeks after the bereavement date. (this is in CP logic but cannot see in PA – need to check)
| END DATE OF SHARED PARENTAL PAY | M023 |
Use M021 to enter the end date of SHPP.
Document CNDCVAL says this datacode is the end date of SPP (which to me means statutory paternity pay) but the logic is clearly rejecting all types except the two shared parental pay.
CP has this as end date of ASPP
Basically, there is a good deal of contradiction about this code.
Format ddmmyyyy
Example
The date of the above is 8th April, 2022:
M023 08042022
NOTES:
- A payment start date must already have been entered.
- This date must be later than the payment start date.

NOTES:
- This datacode is used for the following types of parental pay:
- SMP
- An expected date of childbirth must already have been entered.
- Use of M055, and the other new “for payroll adjustment” versions of M data codes could do with a more in-depth write-up along the lines of the existing M065 details. Leaving for now as your humble author is not an expert on such things, and doesn’t think a copy/paste from M065 is necessarily a good idea unless confirmed by subject matter experts.

Example 2
The employee’s calculated ShPP (Birth) payment is decreased by £15.00 for this payrun only:
M752 1500
Note:
- The addition or subtraction from the calculated SHPP (Birth) payment is reflected in the SAP total paid in the current tax year (held against SHPP (Birth) total paid in current tax year/ M758).
- You can enter successive amounts against each of M751 and M752 in the same pay period. At the time of the payrun, Payroll Active totals the amounts against each and increases or decreases the ShPP (Birth) payment accordingly.
- These datacodes are used for the following types of parental pay:
- ShPP (Birth)
| POSITIVE PRE-DETERMINED ShPP (Birth) PAYMENT | M755 |
| NEGATIVE PRE-DETERMINED ShPP (Birth) PAYMENT | M756 |

M565 -1
M755 -15590
In this example, the number of weeks recovered is 1.
NOTE:
- Use M755 and M756 when Payroll Active is unable to calculate average pay, or Payroll Active has not received the employee’s SHPP (Birth) details in time to calculate payments.
- Use M755 in conjunction with Weeks to be paid for payroll adjustment/M565 to enter pre-determined amounts of SHPP (Birth) to be paid or recovered.
- If you enter pre-determined SHPP (Birth) payments, other than for payroll adjustments, you must enter these payments throughout the period of matching certificate and not revert to automatic calculation.
- As with calculated SHPP (Birth) payments, the net amount held against M755 and M756 is added to the tax year-to-date total SHPP (Birth) paid (held against SHPP (Birth) total paid in current tax year/M758, page ?)
- These datacodes are used for the following types of parental pay:
- SHPP (Birth)
| SHPP (Birth) TOTAL PAID IN CURRENT TAX YEAR | M758 |

M761 4500
Example 2
The employee’s calculated ShPP (Adoption) payment is decreased by £15.00 for this payrun only:
M762 1500
Note:
- The addition or subtraction from the calculated SHPP (Adoption) payment is reflected in the SAP total paid in the current tax year (held against SHPP (Adoption) total paid in current tax year/ M768).
- You can enter successive amounts against each of M761 and M762 in the same pay period. At the time of the payrun, Payroll Active totals the amounts against each and increases or decreases the ShPP (Adoption) payment accordingly.

The employee is to have a pre-determined amount of £155.90 recovered as a payroll adjustment:
M665 -1
M755 -15590
In this example, the number of weeks recovered is 1.
