The UK Government has announced an increase in the National Living Wage (NLW) to £12.21 per hour, effective from April 2025. This decision is based on recommendations from the Low Pay Commission (LPC).
Key Highlights:
- New Rates: The NLW for workers aged 21 and over will rise by £0.77, a 6.7% increase. Other minimum wage rates will also be adjusted:
- 18-20 Year Old Rate: £10.00 (16.3% increase)
- 16-17 Year Old Rate: £7.55 (18.0% increase)
- Apprentice Rate: £7.55 (18.0% increase)
- Accommodation Offset: £10.66 (6.7% increase).
- Economic Impact: The LPC’s recommendations aim to align the NLW with two-thirds of median earnings. This adjustment is intended to provide a pay increase for the lowest-paid workers.
- Future Plans: The Government intends to extend the NLW to workers aged 18 and over in the future. This is part of a broader strategy to support economic growth.
Baroness Philippa Stroud, Chair of the LPC, noted the importance of balancing fair wages for workers with the economic realities faced by employers. The LPC’s consultations and regional visits have aimed to ensure that the new rates reflect a consensus among various stakeholders.
This increase in the NLW is a measure aimed at supporting the financial well-being of workers across the UK.
