May 2023 Bank Holiday FAQ

Monday 8th May, following His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation on 6th May, will be a national bank holiday. This bank holiday will operate in the same way as other bank holidays, and there is no statutory entitlement to time off. Employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement. The bank holiday will take place across the United Kingdom.

Real Living Wage increase announced

Almost 400,000 people working for over 11,000 real Living Wage Employers throughout the country are set for a vital cost-of-living pay boost, as the new Living Wage rates rise to £10.90 an hour across the UK (£1 increase), and £11.95 an hour in London (90p increase), supporting workers and families. This year’s Living Wage rates have been brought forward in recognition of the sharp increase in living costs over the past year.

Workers do not report underpayment due to fear of repercussions

The Low Pay Commission (LPC) today publishes a report on non-compliance and enforcement of the minimum wage in Leicester’s textiles manufacturers. Since 2020, multiple agencies have carried out large-scale joint enforcement operations in Leicester, partly in response to persistent reports of exploitation and underpayment. Low Pay Commissioners heard evidence on the forces driving non-compliance and what enforcement bodies have found.

Return of the Rebate

The Statutory Sick Pay Rebate service is now open. Employers with less than 250 employees (30th November 2021) & paid SSP to employees for coronavirus related absences, could be due financial support. Employers can reclaim up to two weeks' SSP they have paid to their employees, at the relevant standard weekly rate of £96.35, for any eligible periods of coronavirus-related sickness from 21 December 2021.
