Furlough set to end on the 30th September – take action now
The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, commonly known as furlough, will cease to exist after the end of September.
This deadline comes after several push backs by the government in response to rises in coronavirus infections earlier in the year. Government contributions to hours not worked by employees has slowly been declining over the last few months, mirroring relaxations in restrictions.
Ultimately, employers with staff retained on the furlough scheme will be left with the option of redundancy. It is strongly recommended that if employers need to make staff redundant, that they act as soon as possible, due to the process time.
The success of furlough is well documented, but it is yet to be seen whether the government support system has artificially retained jobs, which have subsequently fallen victim to the pandemic.
